Rhino Poaching Crisis
October 2019
I have been dreaming about coming to @careforwild for a really long time. CFW is on a mission to save rhinos from extinction and I was extremely proud and beyond excited to join them and @conservationace team for a month. I was volunteering, assisting with daily cleaning, feeding, and doing maintenance as well as documenting everything that happens here to raise awareness on rhino crisis and tell a wider audience about the amazing work that those organizations are doing here.
I always knew about the problem with illegal poaching and hunting but didn't really know much about the rhino crisis until I visited a game reserve in Cape Town in 2018. Just a day before my arrival poachers killed one of the rhinos. The incident was really fresh, so everyone was talking about it. Knowing that rhino herself, our guide was very emotional when talking about rhino numbers going down and why.
This is when I decided that I want to join @conservationace to learn more, help and raise awareness about it on my socials.
@careforwild pays incredible attention to education here: documentaries, participation in discussions, listening to presentations, learning shocking information that gives you goosebumps. So my role here was to present that information to people and make them learn and act.
"Renature Monchique" Tree Planting & Reforestation
Our team was invited to the Algarve region of southern Portugal to document a “tree-mendous” tree planting project that is changing lives after devastating wildfires in 2018 that burned 27,000 hectares. The project, “Renature Monchique” is managed by @geotambiente and funded by Ryanair as part of their carbon offsetting program.
Project Summary: For this project, our team traveled to Monchique in the southern Algarve of Portugal for one week to observe the region 3 years after devastating wildfires. We documented all aspects of this project, learned how the economic wealth of this region is directly related to the health of the forests, interviewed workers & landowners, and planted native species of trees.
Sponsors: This project was financed in part by GEOTA, a Portuguese NGO focused on environmental conservation and preservation, and also in part by Jack Wolfskin, an eco-friendly brand of outdoor gear and clothing.
Significance: To learn about the challenges associated with tree planting projects, and what we can do right now to improve nature’s resiliency to climate change.
Key Objectives: Learn about Renature Monchique and film an environmental research documentary about it on YouTube; capture high-quality photos and videos of our experience; and bring awareness to this amazing project.
